The singing drummer

The disbanding of the Clickhaze was, perhaps, for better. If, at least, one of the members had been seriously involved with this, though rather attractive, but still a secondary project, a disaster would have happened. Petur Pólson wouldn’t have released his album «Koma»; Eivør Pálsdóttir would, probably, have lost her Faroese identity, if she became simply a good singer instead of a real phenomenon. Jens L. Thomsen could have not devoted himself to Orka either. This will also be true for another musician of a star band, which shone so short on the horizon of the Faroese music (they released only one EP), — Høgni Lisberg.

The Farther, the Better

Before the 2015th hardly began, the Faroese label Tutl had already released, at least, a couple of decent albums, among which you can find Eivǿr’s greatest record and a breathtaking album by Marius. Today, I’ll tell you about them and another three Faroese CDs, my dear friends. So, make yourself comfortable.

Five random CDs from the Faroe Islands

Today, there’s no conceptual foundation in the column “In the player”. Nothing but eclectic music: punk, ethno jazz, mix of folk and klezmer, and melancholic relax-pop. There’s nothing common in all these albums, except of their geographical belonging to the Faroes and “loyalty” to the sole label (Tutl). Even the musicians are different in each album. Marvellous.

The men who sing

Having got out of reviews of nearly academic Faroese music, we cross the borders sharply and find ourselves in the neighbouring regions – actuality of all sorts (ranging from tragicomic Budam to romantic Marius Ziska). Today’s five albums are, of course, very different, but they are akin by men. Incredibly gifted men who sing. And what is more – gloomy covers.

Shine on you crazy tree!

To be sure, that Kristian Blak has got a versatile talent, is enough to listen to at least one of his records. Of course, he plays with the genres so skillfully, that his musical metamorphoses are hardly noticed from the first sight. Though, if you comprehend his works carefully, you can start listening to his album with the academic music, and finish with maestro’s jeers (personally, as I write this, I listen to a ruffian sketch «Risin Og Kellingin» from Blak’s suite «Drangar») and “belly” sounds of the wind instruments.

Heiðrik Á Heygum: «I don’t make music videos for the money or to get famous»

The well-know (at least, in Russia) phrase «A talented person is talented in everything» exactly pictures a Faroese artist Heiðrik Á Heygum. I personally acquainted with him through his videos for the songs of Eivør Pálsdóttir and such bands as ORKA, Byrta, Bloodgroup. Then I realized, that Heiðrik was not so simple. Aside from shooting music videos for the friends-musicians and short films, he also sings his sincere and very melodic songs pretty good. Heiðrik draws and takes nice photos, and some of his album covers (for example, for Guðrið Hansdóttir and the abovesaid Eivør — entirely his work). About own musical projects and the wish to make a full film Heiðrik told your humble narrator.

Synthesis with the unexpected results

Ginman / Eivør «The Color Of Dark»
Columbia Records / Sony Music Entertainment Denmark A/S, 2014ginman eivor (маленький)

The fact that Eivør Pálsdóttir has some projects with Lennart Ginman became notable when a black and white video was uploaded on YouTube. In this video the Faroese beauty dressed in a tuxedo played a kind of gothic country jazz with the Danish musician and his team. However, musicians themselves call it “the savage land between avant-garde and pop-music”. At that time it was obvious that this idea must be worthwhile.
